I fully support Judge Barton's Petition. Retired judges who are not practicing law but provide Judge Pro Tem and other services are providing a valuable service for very little or no compensation . Whether it is filling in for judges who have retired or ill, or doing settlement conferences, i know retired judges enjoy assisting the court they served for many years. It would not only recognize their efforts, but also encourage them to remain judicial members of the Bar. These judges would still be contributing to the Bar's programs, but at a rate that recognizes their contributions.--Ron Reinstein, Judge Superior Court of Arizona (Retired)

As a retired judge who has not practiced law since retirement and who has served as a temporary call back judge in Maricopa and Yavapai Counties, I support Judge Barton's Petition to amend Rule 32.

According to the State Bar, in order to serve as a temporary call back judge, a retired judge must convert to active status and pay the increased bar dues associated with that status even if the retired judge does not otherwise intend to practice law. The nominal compensation paid to retired judges and the fact that temporary work is not guaranteed may serve to dissuade retirees from paying the increased bar dues necessary to perform this work. In addition, there does not appear to be any rational justification for requiring temporary call back judges who are not practicing law to pay more bar dues than full-time judges. For these reasons, I strongly support Judge Barton's Petition to amend Rule 32 to allow retired judges who are not practicing law to retain judicial status and pay the judicial rate for annual bar dues as opposed to active rate bar dues.

    Respectfully submitted,

    Linda H. Miles
