Health Benefits: Medical Plans

Employees may choose from three different types of medical plans:

 ·       Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO)
 ·       Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)
 ·       Health Savings Account Option (HSA)

The EPO
An EPO provides benefits at a lower cost to you as long as you use contracted network physicians and hospitals.  Out-of-network services are only covered in emergency situations.  Under the EPO plan, you will pay the monthly premium and any required copayments at the time of service.  Your care may be coordinated through your Primary Care Physician or you may seek treatment directly from a specialist in the network.

The PPO
The PPO plan allows in-network and out-of-network treatment.  There is a lower level of costs when you use in-network providers and a higher level of costs when you use out-of-network providers.  Additionally, there is an annual in-network and out-of-network deductible that must be met.  Under the PPO plan, you will pay the monthly premium and any required copayments or coinsurance at the time of service.  Your care may be coordinated through your Primary Care Physician or you may seek treatment directly from a specialist.

The HSA
The HSA Option is a high deductible plan that allows in-network and out-of-network treatment.  You must meet the annual in-network and out-of-network deductible before the insurance begins to cover any non-preventative services or prescriptions.  Preventative services are fully covered.

Enrolling in the HSA Option makes you eligible to open a Health Savings Account (HSA), which is a special type of account that allows tax-free contributions, earnings and healthcare related withdrawals.  The State makes monthly contributions to your HSA and you have the option to contribute pretax dollars to the account via payroll deduction.  Unused funds in the account will rollover from year to year.  This allows you to create a healthcare nest egg.
