2013 Statewide Summer Training Highlights
Pima County
The Pima County Superior Court June Jam 5 (JJ5) training event was a success with over 1000 court staff taking advantage of classes. The training event offered a variety of sessions totaling 58.5 COJET hours and included two general sessions featuring nationally known speakers who also presented at the 2013 Judicial Conference. The Honorable Kevin Burke presented information on “Everybody is a Leader: Court Leadership in a Difficult Era,” and Gary Marchant, Ph.D., J.D. presented on “Emerging Technologies and the Future of Law.” Offerings also included classes on defensive driving, gang awareness, unlawful harassment, human trafficking, psychological implications of workplace microaggression, mental health first aid, and what to do in case of an active shooter. Not even smoke from the training center AC unit, an evacuation of the training center, or a visit from the fire department dampened the JJ5 momentum!
Coconino County
110 people and provided 25 different classes during their conference. They welcomed participants from Coconino, Greenlee, Ajo, Navajo Nation Kayenta Division, and attorneys in the Flagstaff area). The conference was a huge success!
Yavapai County
210 participants attended over 20 classes, 1 of which lasted all day, all 3 days. One of the highlights of the conference was the presentation of Paperclips, a documentary about a Tennessee middle school and their project on prejudice & intolerance with emphasis on the Holocaust. A local Holocaust survivor spoke after the documentary and shared her story. Additionally, during the 3 days, they were able to raise over $1800.00 with a fundraiser for our local juveniles & their families through the participants generosity buying lunch/bake sale items.
Court of Appeals, Div. 1
Judicial Assistant Brandie Castle and Staff Attorney Barbara Vidal Vaught decided it would be beneficial to have a “COJET Day” while the judges were at the judicial conference. They put together programs including in the morning a ‘Tour of the Maricopa County Superior Court’ and a presentation ‘Local Issues in the Court System: Media and the Courts’, a Pizza lunch was offered for those who wished to participate. Then an ethics afternoon with a presentation of the movie “The Firm” with guided topical discussions before and after, then another ethical presentation entitled “Discrimination/Harassment/Retaliation.” In all 6.25 hours of COJET was offered. A great day was had by all and we have had many requests to provide it again next year in addition to our Fall Brown Bag series. I would like to give a very special thank you to Brandie and Barbara who spent a great deal of their time coordinating this special day getting speakers…Rick DeBruhl, Jennifer Liewer, Rachel Bacalzo and making it the great success that it was.
Mohave County
June 26th through June 28th Mohave County COJET held its Summer 2013 COJET Conference. With a return to 16 hours of required training, we really beefed up our summer offerings, providing the following classes in our Kingman, Bullhead City and Lake Havasu City locations: AZTEC/Charge and Sentencing Disposition and Update; AZTEC/Processing Protective Orders; Communication in the Courts; Crime Laboratory/Physical Evidence and the Law; 2 Movies – “Freedom Writers” and “To Kill a Mockingbird”; Negativity in the Workplace; Preventing Unlawful Harassment; Purposes and Responsibilities of Arizona’s Courts; “Sins of the Fathers”; Strategies on Improving Employee Engagement; and Values Workshops. Blended Conference - Save the Date!
The Judicial Staff Education Committee and Education Services Division invite you to participate in our very first statewide Staff Conference on September 20, 2013!
The theme - “Everyone a Leader” - mirrors this year’s Judicial Conference theme reinforcing that every Arizona court employee, from clerks to judicial officers, has the ability as a leader to uphold the virtue of trust the public has in our judiciary and the rule of law.

We encourage you to conduct in-person breakout sessions locally throughout the rest of the day in hopes that we may be able to combine efforts and provide staff with several quality COJET opportunities through this one-day event.
More information including optional breakout session curricula will be forthcoming. For now, stay tuned and save the date – September 20, 2013!
