Retired Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice Frank Gordon, and Administrative Director Dave Byers, were among those honored at a ceremony in the LEARN Center at Catalina Magnet High School in Tucson.
The LEARN Center at Catalina started in 1987 when then Chief Justice Frank Gordon and then Deputy Director Dave Byers visited a literacy lab and envisioned a similar program designed to improve literacy for adults and children. In September 1987, the first pilot program started at Catalina Magnet High School and is the only public school that still operates a LEARN Lab.
The LEARN Lab is designed to help at-risk high school students to develop the 21st century skills needed to succeed.
The Program is now completing its 25th year and has been recognized nationally.
The LEARN Program was selected by the Arizona School Board Association for the 2000 ASBA Golden Bell Award and the 2006 Golden Bell Award for outstanding curriculum.
