Meet the Director

If the Arizona Court System was a Fortune 500 company, Dave Byers would be the CEO. Fortunately for the residents of Arizona, Dave is a thoughtful, honorable "CEO" who has spent his career devoted to public service and to the administration of justice.

In honor of this hard work, Dave recently received the State Bar of Arizona’s 2011 Award of Appreciation. This award is given to a non-member of the bar in recognition of outstanding service toward the creation of a better public understanding of the legal profession and the administration of justice.

Dave has been with the Supreme Court since 1978 and has held a variety of positions including Director of the State Foster Care Review Board System, Director of the Program Services Division, Director of Adult and Juvenile Probation, and the Deputy Director of the Administrative Office of the Courts.

In November 1992, Dave was appointed Administrative Director of the Arizona Courts to assist the Chief Justice in carrying out the supervision of all the courts in the state.

It is a challenging position, which includes oversight and administration of a court system that employs 10,000 people and operates in more than 200 locations, processes more than 2.6 million cases per year; supervises 42,000 adult felons on probation; and manages a combined budget from all courts in excess of $550 million dollars.

With state budgets across the country struggling to rebound from the recession, state courts are facing possibly their worst crisis in decades. The American Bar Association (ABA) Journal recently asked 10 experts to share “How Courts Could Do More With Less” in their June issue. Visit the article, which features Dave's comments and thoughts on this topic.

Dave also plays an important role in the state’s retirement system. He was recently re-elected for the second year as Chair of the Board of Trustees of the State’s $25B retirement system.

He also currently serves on the Global Advisory Commission for the Department of Justice; Arizona Criminal Justice Commission; Board of Directors of the Arizona Prosecuting Attorney’s Advisory Council; and Board of Governors of the State Bar of Arizona.

Dave received a B.A. Degree from the University of Northern Iowa in 1971 and a Masters Degree from Arizona State University in 1975.
