As past-president of Arizona Attorneys for Criminal Justice, and as a participant on the Criminal Rules Task Force, I am writing to endorse the State Bar's comment, favoring the proposed changes but requesting the Court adopt the changes as modified in the State Bar's comment. The Rules are meant to guide decision-makers, litigants, and parties. Having specified language regarding timelines in the rules will provide more such assistance, while still ensuring that no litigant is treated for longer than his or her maximum possible sentence.
