Identity Theft

The purpose of this section is to provide information only and is not intended to give legal advice or opinions.

If someone has become a victim of identity theft, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has an internet web page that will provide the victim with very important information on what to do if someone else is misusing their Social Security Number (SSN). The SSA also has publications available at http://www.ssa.gov/pubs/10064.html on identity theft and instructions on when and how to contact the SSA. The SSA suggests the victim contact the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) if someone is using their SSN.

  • TTY (866) 653-4261

When a victim of identity theft contacts the FTC, the FTC will suggest the victim file a report with their local police department and get a copy of the report.  Another suggestion is for the victim to contact at least one of the following three national credit reporting organizations.
