Legal Paraprofessional Program
Originally called a Limited License Legal Practitioner (LLLP) by the Task Force on the Delivery of Legal Services, a Legal Paraprofessional (LP) is a professional with specific education and experience who is licensed to provide legal services in limited practice areas. This professional is often compared to a nurse practitioner in the medical field.
Under ACJA § 7-210, Legal Paraprofessionals can
- Prepare and sign legal documents;
- Provide specific advice, opinions, or recommendations about possible legal rights, remedies, defenses, options, or strategies;
- Draft and file documents, related to motions, discovery, interim and final orders, and modification of orders, and arrange for service of legal documents:
- Appear before a court or tribunal
- Negotiate legal rights or responsibilities.
Legal Paraprofessionals can be licensed in the areas of Family Law, Administrative Law, Limited Jurisdiction Civil Law, and Criminal Law. Opportunities to serve in the areas of Juvenile Depndency Law and Adoptions are coming soon.
Complaints against Legal Paraprofessionals are received, investigated, and prosecuted by the State Bar of Arizona in the same manner as complaints against lawyers.
